CDC says more than 20 million people infected with flu in China; 3.3 million with pneumonia

A Chinese health official says more people infected in China with flu-like symptoms have been infected with pneumonia than with coronavirus.

The official, Zhao Xiaochuan, said Thursday that more than 200,000 people had been infected and nearly 400,000 had been hospitalized in the country in the past month.

The pandemic has killed nearly 3.5 million people and forced the closure of 2.5 billion factories.

More:China is expected to have at least 50 million flu-related deaths by next year, Zhao said, but some experts believe the true figure could be much higher because of underreporting of deaths.

The pandemic began in March and spread rapidly to China, where more than 2 million people have died from flu-associated coronaviruses.

China has had the world’s highest flu death toll with more than 9,000 confirmed and suspected cases.
